What Happens at a Sports Physical?

If your child is new to the world of organized athletics, you may be wondering what a sports physical is and how it differs from an annual physical. The purpose of a sports physical is to assess whether a child is healthy enough to participate in the activity in question. To make this determination, a practitioner will perform a physical examination and ask some questions about the child’s medical and family histories. The physical examination usually involves assessing a child’s:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Vitals (such as blood pressure and pulse)
  • Vision
  • Ears, nose, and throat
  • Lungs and abdomen
  • Strength, flexibility, and joints

A sports physical is not as comprehensive as an annual physical, which also takes into account a child’s developmental, emotional, and social health.

How Much Does a Sports Physical Cost?

At PhysicianOne Urgent Care, we charge an $80 flat fee for school, sports, and camp physicals. Unfortunately, this amount likely won’t be covered by insurance, since most carriers tend to cover only one physical examination each year (your child’s annual physical).

No Appointment Needed

Throughout the visit I felt like the staff really cared. The doctor took his time talking with me about my symptoms, and I felt like he listened to all my concerns and took that into consideration when recommending the right treatment. Thank you!
