When to Seek Treatment for a Fever

If you have a fever, you may be wondering whether you need professional care, or if you can treat your symptoms at home. For adults, a fever that’s above the normal body temperature of 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit but below 103 degrees likely won’t require professional treatment (although you may still require care for whatever underlying condition is causing the fever). However, while children usually have a slightly higher normal body temperature (typically between 97.9 and 100.4 degrees), even a small increase in an infant or toddler may indicate a serious problem requiring care.

Is Your Fever Caused by COVID?

If you’ve recently developed a fever, you might be worried that you have COVID. In addition to coughing, difficulty breathing, and a new loss of taste or smell, a fever can be a symptom of this virus. Keep in mind, though, that it’s much more likely that your fever is being caused by something else.

Although it can certainly be scary to consider the possibility of having COVID, you can relax knowing that the care you need is just a phone call away. We offer Virtual Visits so that our providers can evaluate your condition from the comfort of your home. At the close of this visit, we’ll be able to let you know whether you need to stop by our office for a COVID test.

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
