What Is Considered a Fever?

A fever is a rise in normal body temperature, and a telling symptom that something abnormal is happening within the immune system. At-home fever treatment includes taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen to ease any discomfort and staying well-hydrated. However, you should visit PhysicianOne Urgent Care if you have a temperature above 103°F or if your fever is accompanied by any of the following symptoms:

  • A severe headache
  • Frequent vomiting
  • A stiff neck
  • A rash
  • Sensitivity to bright light
  • Confusion
  • Abdominal pain

If your child has a fever, come to our urgent care center if he or she:

  • Has a temperature above 104°F
  • Is irritable, thirstier than usual, and/or not as active
  • Has a temperature of 100.4°F or higher for more than three days
  • Is under two years old and has a temperature of 100.4°F for more than one day

Babies under six months old require medical attention if they have a rectal temperature of 102°F or higher. (A baby less than three months old with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F requires emergency medical attention.)

Fever & COVID-19

If you have a fever and would like to be tested for COVID-19, you can do so at PhysicianOne Urgent Care. We’ll first evaluate your symptoms during a Virtual Visit—which takes place over a secure videoconferencing platform—and then, if testing is the right next step, we can register you for a test at a time that works with your schedule. We offer curbside COVID-19 testing to limit your exposure to other individuals.

"The overall care I received was excellent! I also appreciate your affiliation with Yale New Haven Hospital."

Patient
Derby, CT

"Throughout the visit I felt like the staff really cared. The Doctor took his time talking with me about my symptoms, and I felt like he listened to all my concerns and took that into consideration when recommending the right treatment. Thank you!"

Patient
Hamden, CT

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
