What Is a Sports Physical?

Also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), a sports physical determines if a child is healthy enough to participate in a certain sport. In Connecticut, all children who intend to play on a youth sports team are required to receive a physical beforehand.

This examination involves:

  • Taking a detailed medical history to learn of any underlying conditions, past injuries, current medications, and previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Recording the child’s height, weight, and vitals (blood pressure and pulse)
  • Completing a vision screening
  • Evaluating the child’s heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, throat, posture, and joints
  • Testing the child’s strength and flexibility

The goal of a sports physical is to identify any health conditions that could interfere with a child’s ability to participate in his or her chosen activity. Uncovering a health condition doesn’t mean the child will be deemed unfit for the sport—in most cases, the medical practitioner will simply provide strategies and treatment recommendations to ensure they can participate as healthily as possible. For example, a child with asthma who wants to join the track team may be given a higher-dosage inhaler. Or, if the physical uncovers a history of frequent injuries, the practitioner may recommend specific stretches to do before and after practices and games to reduce their risk of re-injury.

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
