When Do You Need a Flu Test?

Flu Test Derby CTIf you suspect you have the flu, your first thought might be to get a flu test. However, in most cases, a flu test is not necessary to treat flu symptoms. What’s more important is to see a doctor within 48 hours of experiencing flu symptoms, as this is the timeframe when antiviral medications are most effective at treating the condition.
Whether you’re positive you have the flu or are just experiencing flu-like symptoms, you can visit PhysicianOne Urgent Care in Derby, Connecticut, for a diagnosis. The medical provider you see while at our facility will be able to provide a clinical diagnosis and appropriate treatment based on their own expertise. Since rapid flu tests are not 100% accurate, we don’t always use them as a diagnostic tool.

What Are the Symptoms of the Flu?

Some of the more common symptoms you will experience if you have influenza include:

  • Congestion
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Cough

It should be noted, however, that many other health conditions present these same symptoms. For example, the common cold, respiratory infections, strep throat, and mono are conditions that may have flu-like symptoms. In these cases, a flu test can be helpful in confirming a diagnosis and prescribing proper treatment.

How Is the Flu Treated?

If it’s determined that you have the flu, we will then get to work on providing a proper treatment plan that’s aimed at easing your symptoms. We will prescribe antiviral medications to ease the severity and duration of the flu as well as recommend a regimen of taking over-the-counter pain relievers, resting, and staying hydrated.

"Throughout the visit I felt like the staff really cared. The Doctor took his time talking with me about my symptoms, and I felt like he listened to all my concerns and took that into consideration when recommending the right treatment. Thank you!"

Patient
Hamden, CT

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
