Types of COVID-19 Tests

There are three types of COVID-19 tests: two that can confirm if you have an active strain of the COVID-19 virus and one that can confirm if you were previously infected with it:

  • PCR tests – PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests are considered the most accurate and reliable. They detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus’s specific genetic material. Generally, PCR test results are returned within 24 hours, but they can take longer during peak periods.
  • Rapid tests – A rapid antigen test is less accurate than a PCR test, but can deliver conclusive results in patients who are currently exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. And results can be ready much more quickly, sometimes within 15 minutes. This test determines if there are protein fragments specific to coronavirus.
  • Antibody tests – Antibody tests detect if IgM and IgG antibodies are present in the body’s immune system, which could indicate that the patient had a previous COVID-19 infection.

Son kissing mother

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today.
