How to Treat a Minor Burn

If you have a first-degree burn (which typically causes pain and redness) or a second-degree burn (which may also produce swelling and blisters), you’ll likely be able to treat it at home by:

  • Running it under cool water (avoid using cold water or applying ice)
  • Keeping the area clean
  • Regularly checking for fever, drainage, and other signs of infection
  • Taking pain medication
  • Applying aloe vera gel (for a sunburn)
  • Applying antibiotic cream and lightly covering it with gauze (for a thermal burn)

However, some minor burns require professional care. Be sure to consult with an experienced provider if:

  • Your burn is at least 3 inches wide or located on your face, hands, feet, genitalia, buttocks, or over a major joint
  • You’re experiencing severe pain
  • You think you might have an infection
  • Your symptoms aren’t showing any signs of improvement after 48 hours

Third- and fourth-degree burns always require emergency care since they can be life-threatening. You should call 911 or head to a nearby emergency room if you experience any numbness or if your skin appears deep red, brown, white, black, charred, or leathery.
