Does Champagne Really Help Your Memory?

Does Champagne Help with Memory?Social media recently breathed life into an old study, which suggested champagne might boost memory in humans. While many people celebrated the news, experts were quick to urge caution. Before you pop the cork on a bottle of bubbly, learn how to improve memory without upping your alcohol intake.
What Was the Study?
Conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom, the 2013 study sought to determine if drinking one to three glasses of champagne a week could reduce memory loss associated with aging, while delaying the onset of dementia. Ultimately, the researchers found that subjects demonstrated better spatial memory, thanks to the phenolic acid compounds found within the alcoholic drink.
Experts Urge Caution
According to experts, while the study does peak interest, it is anything but conclusive. For one, the study’s subjects were rats, which have a much different biology than human beings. Likewise, because the damaging effects of alcohol consumption are well documented, there are much safer ways to get memory-boosting flavonoids.
Safer Ways to Boost Memory
A number of studies have linked certain foods to improved brain function. These include fish, whole grains and colorful, flavonoid-rich vegetables and fruits, such as:

  • Berries
  • Leafy, green vegetables
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Tomatoes
  • Dark chocolate
  • Olive oil

The Role of Exercise
A mountain of research has linked regular exercise to improved brain function. If you want to ward of dementia and improve your memory, the single greatest thing you can do is exercise regularly. You should also stay at a healthy weight and reduce high cholesterol, since this has been linked to an increased risk of age-related brain decline.

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
