How Long Does Pneumonia Last?

If you’re experiencing pneumonia symptoms, you’re probably wondering how long you can expect them to stick around. Unfortunately, there’s no clear-cut answer to this question, since the pneumonia recovery period varies depending on the severity of the infection:

  • Walking pneumonia (a mild version of the illness often producing a low-grade fever, a dry cough, labored breathing, chills, chest pain, a headache, a sore throat, and loss of appetite) generally doesn’t require any bed rest and typically lasts for about a week.
  • Standard pneumonia (which can cause a fever greater than 101° F, a wet cough producing phlegm, shortness of breath, fatigue, chills, chest pain, a headache, a sore throat, and loss of appetite) often requires at least a few days of bed rest. Especially severe cases may require hospitalization and take at least a month to resolve.

You can receive treatment for both walking pneumonia and standard pneumonia at PhysicianOne Urgent Care. However, if you’re experiencing any life-threatening symptoms—for example, a very high fever, difficulty breathing, severe headache or chest pain, dizziness, persistent vomiting, lethargy, confusion, or bluish lips, skin, or fingernails—you should call 911 or get to a nearby hospital as soon as possible.

Son kissing mother

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today.
