What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a type of infection that occurs when bacteria works its way through the urinary tract and into the bladder or kidneys. While an infection in your bladder can be painful, an infection in your kidneys can have much more serious consequences. That’s why, if you believe you have a urinary tract infection, you should seek treatment immediately. Some common symptoms of UTIs include:

  • A strong, persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Only passing small amounts of urine
  • Urine that is cloudy, red, or bright pink
  • Urine that has a strong odor
  • Lower or upper back pain or discomfort
  • Passing small blood clots
  • Fever or chills

If we determine that you have a UTI, we can treat it with an appropriate course of antibiotics or other prescription medications. What’s more, once you start your treatment, relief from the worst of the symptoms can happen quickly, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

Patient
Hamden, CT

"I had to take my son in for an ear infection following a sudden change in temperament at daycare. He was inconsolable the entire car ride but when we got there and by the time we left this care facility he was back to his normal happy go lucky little two year old boy. I highly recommend PhysicianOne Urgent Care."

Patient
Westwood, MA

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week. My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today."
